Typodarium 2014

I was very happy when I found out that five of my fonts feature in Typodarium 2014. Typodarium is a daily dose of type design, a tear-off calendar, like the one our grandma used to hang in her kitchen, unveiling a new font every day: 365 fonts by 232 designers and foundries from 26 countries. On the front, the font is prominently displayed, and on the back it is described in detail. Typodarium 2014 is edited by Lars Harmsen and Raban Ruddigkeit, published by Verlag Hermann Schmidt Mainz in an edition of 10,000 and is sold online and in design- and museum shops and selected bookstores around the world for €16.80. The featured fonts are: Crazy Fredericka (Tuesday 29 April), Granny’s Bear Hunt (Saturday 9 August), Broken Promises (Thursday 4 September), Featherstone (Wednesday 8 October) and Rock Paper Scissors (Wednesday 3 December).

A New Home for Issoria

Hospice Issoria Logo

Hospice Issoria Logo

About fifteen years ago I designed a logo for an initiative group wanting to start a hospice in Leiden, the Netherlands. Now, celebrating its tenth birthday, Hospice Issoria moves to a bigger home at Burggravenlaan 11.  I am delighted that as part of this I was asked to exhibit a number of papercuts. The exhibition can be viewed during the Open Day on Saturday 21st September from 11.00 – 16.00.

Memory Box

Memory Box

Memory Box: Shane Byrne in the Forest Scene

Together with Gabriella Kiss, I designed the set for Memory Box by Equinox Theatre Company, which premiered at this year’s Abhainn Ri Festival. It was an honour and a pleasure to collaborate with such a talented and dedicated cast and crew.

Memory Box shows a dystopian world in which people who are different are feared, persecuted and hunted. It tells the terrifying tale of an extraordinary man who journeys to escape the regime of oppression shrouding the land, armed only with his memories.  Equinox is a bold, beautiful, brilliant and brave ensemble. Artists with learning difficulties and disabilities work in collaboration with other professional theatre practitioners to create work that challenges and delights both its makers and its audience.

Fonts

Fonts

Over the last year I have experimented with the online font-building tool Fontstruct and the font design software Glyphs Mini, building a number of experimental typefaces, three of which I used on the posters for the Paperwork, Rock Paper Scissors and Full Circle exhibitions.

I have now published these and some other experimental fonts on the Dafont website under the name Font Studio Four. They are free for personal use and can be downloaded here.

Another of my typefaces Crazy Fredericka (named after the pangram Crazy Fredericka bought many very exquisite opal jewels.) was one of three winners in Fontstruct’s Stencilfont Competition.
