Waking Up in Waterford

Waking Up in Waterford Poster

Waking Up in Waterford Poster

I will exhibit a number of paper-cuts in Waterford Regional Hospital as part of the exhibitions programme curated by Waterford Healing Arts Trust. The title of the exhibition, Waking Up in Waterford, refers to my hospital admission after a traumatic accident many years ago. Through a series of more figurative paper-cuts I have tried to revisited my stay as a patient in the hospital and the visual narrative that runs through the exhibition follows a journey towards recovery.

Waking Up In Waterford will run from Thursday 10th April, 2014 until the 6th June, 2014. For further information please contact the Waterford Healing Arts Trust on 051-842664 or e-mail WHAT@hse.ie

Typodarium 2014

I was very happy when I found out that five of my fonts feature in Typodarium 2014. Typodarium is a daily dose of type design, a tear-off calendar, like the one our grandma used to hang in her kitchen, unveiling a new font every day: 365 fonts by 232 designers and foundries from 26 countries. On the front, the font is prominently displayed, and on the back it is described in detail. Typodarium 2014 is edited by Lars Harmsen and Raban Ruddigkeit, published by Verlag Hermann Schmidt Mainz in an edition of 10,000 and is sold online and in design- and museum shops and selected bookstores around the world for €16.80. The featured fonts are: Crazy Fredericka (Tuesday 29 April), Granny’s Bear Hunt (Saturday 9 August), Broken Promises (Thursday 4 September), Featherstone (Wednesday 8 October) and Rock Paper Scissors (Wednesday 3 December).

Rock Paper Scissors, an exhibition of papercuts by Paul Bokslag at Garter Lane Arts Centre, O’Connell Street, Waterford

Opening reception Tuesday 12 June 2012 at 7 pm. The exhibition will be officially opened by Mary Grehan, Arts Director Waterford Healing Arts Trust

Exhibition continues until Saturday 21 July, Tue- Sat, 11am-5.30pm

The papercuts in Rock Paper Scissors are part of a continuing exploration of movement, gesture and form and the possibilities of the medium. The works are the result of a slow subtractive process of accumulated freehand marks, using ordinary sheets of paper and simple blades. They play with the contrast between line and plane, foreground and background, positive and negative space, order and disorder and both the fragility and strength of paper.

The Wood between the Worlds, Occupy Space, Limerick

Three large circular pieces were exhibited as part of The Wood Between the Worlds exhibition at Occupy Space, Thomas Street, Limerick in May 2012.

The exhibition was curated by Noelle Collins and included work by Paul Bokslag, Fiona Burke, Gerard Carson, Marie Connole, Aoife Flynn, Marilyn Gaffney, James L. Hayes, Christine Mackey and Eimearjean McCormack

The Wood between the Worldsis an exhibition of works from contemporary artists using paper as a fundamental material in their practice. Through both invitation and an open submission call, artists working in sculpture, printing, collage, painting and mixed media explore the transformative quality of paper. The Wood between the Worlds as described in the writing of C.S Lewis is a transitional space between alternate realities. Upon arrival in the Wood you are susceptible to amnesia, but once you have been transported there, other Worlds are accessible through pools of water. The potential to see different versions of the World we inhabit seems an abstract reference in relation to artists using paper, but it is that sense of possibility and escapism that informed the selection of work.
